چکیده

The suitability of tissue cultures of canine origin for isolation of viruses from dogs was studied. Primary cultures of kidney, lung, heart and whole dog embryo, low-passage tracheal cells and a continuous line of epithelial-like cells derived from dog kidney were challenged with 27viruses. These included the infectious caninehepatitis virus, two coxsackieAand six coxsackieBviruses, three types of poliovirus, ten ECHO viruses, one adenovirus, the western and eastern strains of equine encephalitis virus, and A and B strains of influenza virus. Although each type of cells supported the growth of one or more viruses as evidenced by the cytopathic effect none of them appeared to be more suitable for virus isolation studies than HeLa and monkey kidney cells.

Development and Cytogenetic Characterization of a Continuous Bovine Kidney Cell Line (IRKHBK) and Evaluation its Susceptibility to some Viruses

In this syudy a continuous bovine kidney cell line derived from a primary bovine kidney cells was established for the first time in Iran. The cells were originating from two-day-old normal male calf of Holstein breed. The cell cultures were continuously passaged following complete proliferation of primary cells. The specific properties or characteristics of the cell were defined using cytogenet...

Detection of Human Influenza Viruses in Nasopharyngeal Samples by RT-PCR vs Tissue Culture

Background and Aims: Influenza virus is a major pathogen involved in respiratory illnesses during winter seasons. A variety of diagnostic methods have been developed to identify influenza viruses in clinical specimen. Methods: Nasal and pharyngeal samples taken from patients were inoculated into Madin-Darby canine kidney (MOCK) cells and embryonated chicken eggs (ECEs). The culture media was a...

Evolution of viruses and cells: do we need a fourth domain of life to explain the origin of eukaryotes?

The recent discovery of diverse very large viruses, such as the mimivirus, has fostered a profusion of hypotheses positing that these viruses define a new domain of life together with the three cellular ones (Archaea, Bacteria and Eucarya). It has also been speculated that they have played a key role in the origin of eukaryotes as donors of important genes or even as the structures at the origi...

Molecular characterization of canine astrovirus, vesivirus and circovirus, isolated from diarrheic dogs in Turkey

Background: Canine astrovirus (CAstV) has been considered the primary cause of gastroenteritis in young animals worldwide, while canine vesivirus (CVeV) and canine circovirus (CCiV) are occasionally reported. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the existence and molecular characteristics for these three viruses in Turkey. Methods: Faecal samples from 150 shelter dogs with gastrointestinal pro...

Closed Dog Colony

The problem of endogenous viral contamination of simian cell cultures is well-recognized and was the subject of a recent review (7). Only sporadic reports have appeared in the literature on viral contamination of canine kidney cell cultures. Among viruses recovered in kidney cultures derived from apparently normal dogs are canine hepatitis (12) and canine distemper virus (10). Spertzel et al. (...
